User Rating

We have a simple user rating system to help with trustworthiness of user transactions on the marketplace.
On every users profile page you can vote up or down your experience with a user.
You just vote the user in general, not single transactions. It does not matter if you are the seller or buyer.
The accumulated votes will be displayed on offers and in the user profile.

Send Limits in the Messenger

A spammer tried to send thousands of automated messages to users and partly succeeded (sorry!).
We now have a rate limit to prevent that in the future. Standard users can only send three messages per hour. Unicorns can send unlimited messages.

Show Raters

The User Ratings are no more anonymous. Users wanted to have more transparency who is rating them up or down.
That also might help to easier find out vote abuse.
See the usernames of raters in the User Rating box on the User detail pages.

A better Panel Selector

Every click on the tiny arrows in the Panel Selector now actually shows a new, different panel version.

In the former approach the system just rotated through every version change of a module data entry, no matter if only a text was changed or in fact a new image was uploaded.

Searchable User Messages

You can now search in your private user messages. This feature will be probably used by myself the most.

Beep, Bopp, Bleep: [email protected]

Revert module rating

You now can revoke your rating for a module via the link Delete my rating directly on the module detail page.

Beep, Bopp, Bleep: [email protected]

WebP image format

The images in the module browser are now in WebP format. That should decreases file size and load time by more than 30%.
WebP file format is supported in most browsers (Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Edge). Browser that cannot display WebP (Apple Safari) will get jpgs as before.
If everything looks good we will probably also change the modular builder to use WebP images.

Builder´s Notes

On the rack builder page there is a new tab menu entry Builders's Notes beside the Comments tab. This is a private text area where you can add and edit notes related to your rack build. Builders's Notes is a Unicorn feature.

Rainbow Cables

The Sketch a Patch section has a new cable color system available: Rainbow
The color of the cables is not defined by length like in the Stackable and Doepfer systems.
Instead the colour is assigned automatically in order one after another in series as you lay them out. 12 colors are available.
This should make it easier to follow complex patches.

Clean up the mess!

In the Edit menu on the rack planner page is a new entry called Clean up the mess!.
That function indeed cleans up the mess by deleting all modules that are placed outside of the rack.
It's a requested feature by a heavy user who was tired to delete the modules one by one.

I don’t see available hp anymore when moving a module around in a rack. Has this been removed?
I’m using Safari on iOS and OSX.

Thank you! I don‘t know why I missed that..

Option to turn off Keyboard Shortcuts

There are some nice keyboard shortcuts like copy, paste, duplicate, etc. in the planner.
But unfortunately users reported issues where the shortcuts interfere with the search form.
We now have the option to disable the shortcuts entirely. Find the button top right where you can enable/disable Popovers, Space Guides, Panel Selector.

Bugfix: upload images in Safari

That is more a Safari bug than a ModularGrid bug, but I have made a walkaround so that it is possible again to upload module, pedal images and user avatars in Safari 14.

Beep, Bopp, Bleep: [email protected]

Hi Modulargrid,

Thank you very much for the keyboard shortcut option! :-)

Have a good weekend and kind regards, Garfield.

Classic Make Noise Wogglebug. What's up with the image?

Hi Ffraserr,

In your My Modular section, make sure the Rack Lock is switched off and then make sure the Panel Selector is switched on as well. Then you go to the bottom of any module (those that offer more than one different front panel) and you got there a left and right arrow icon where you can click on to browse through the different front panels.

The Wogglebug (2014 version) that's available now is by the way the default if I am not mistaken, so not 100% sure what you mean?

I hope this helped and kind regards, Garfield.

Users can only rate each other if they have had contact via the ModularGrid messager

You cannot rate random people anymore by accident, you have to send them a message or have received a message from them.

Added United Kingdom as a separate region

UK is not part of EU anymore.

Hide Advertising

Everyone has an opinion about advertising. This opinion strongly depends on the role in which one encounters the topic.
We tried to make the ads as relevant as possible but we understand that some users don't want to see it, especially those users that support the site with the Unicorn account.

I have deployed a new option for Unicorn users to disable and hide most of the ads:

  • the leaderboard ads on the module browser
  • the ebay section on the module detail page
  • the reverb section on the same page

Unicorns can chose to display/hide the ads on the user settings page.

Facelift

Restructured Layout

We have updated the page layout slightly. The CSS is modernized and the page should look better on mobile devices and on very large screens. We have tried to keep the bootstrap look and also kept all the buttons on their sometimes weird places.

The homepage, rack view, rack edit and user view changed the most.
Data on the module detailpage is restructured and includes ideas from Roey from Play Think Make.

Darkmode

Top requested and finally here: Darkmode exchanges the bright white background against a darker tone which might be more pleasing to the eye, especially on late evening module research missions.

On most Apple devices darkmode can be switched on and off in the System Preferences (General -> Appearance on MacOs), so if you have darkmode enabled for your OS it will automatically be enabled on ModularGrid too.
Of course it can be manually set in your user preferences (https://www.modulargrid.net/e/users/edit)

Beep, Bopp, Bleep: [email protected]

Hey @Modulargrid,

The new Page Layout, while in darkmode, applies a filter: grayscale(50%) on every image. Is this intended?
Because it makes the page and especially the module pictures and your rack look really washed out.

Hey, yes that is intended to tone the contrast in images down. I am collecting some more feedback and then maybe reduce the filter/find a better solution..

Edit: made a new thread for discussion: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/forum/posts/index/9974

Hi,

In general the changes look nice. One issue I've seen is that the racks are stretched too tall or something and the bottom of the racks cover up the stats (like the power usage and costs, etc) EDIT: I forgot to mention I'm using Windows 10 and Google Chrome browser on a PC laptop.

And unfortunately for me . . . one thing I've been taking advantage of for a long time is the fact that the command window used to only show 4 racks horizontally, and my main system happens to be 4 racks wide (and 4 racks tall) so I could carefully name my racks in such a way that they would line up in the same order as my physical system. Now that the Command window allows 7 racks horizontally I had to add 3 filler racks on each of the 4 rows to get my alignment back. Oh well . . . .

reCaptcha fix

One new fix for an annoying bug:
We use reCaptcha to fight forum spam.
If you post in the forum and write for more than 2 min the reCaptcha token expired and you had to click submit a second time.
That should now be fixed, because the recaptcha token is now generated on submit and not on page load as before.
(And if this post is saved it's also a test that it works).

  • enabled Markdown for the signature

Previous/Next Page Buttons

The Previous/Next Page Buttons top right on the module detail page now work more in an expected way:
If you come from the Module Finder page those buttons now follow the search results.
Before that they always advanced by the upload date of a module which mostly was pretty much useless.

Forum: embed albums from Bandcamp

Bandcamp embeds should work now. You have to go to Bandcamps Share/Embed options, then select a "style" and then copy the code that is listed with the option wordpress.com. Paste that in the ModGrid forum post and it should render the album.

Search

If you typed something into the search form every post in the post view was hidden that did not contain the search string. That was confusing. Now the search term is just highlighted.

Hi Modulargrid,

I only now see your change log for this. I would like to thank you very much for that update, very much appreciated. I am now less worried to reach that limit for a while :-)

Have a nice day and kind regards, Garfield.

Module Rack Track

Users planning big racks sometimes lose track of which modules they have already assigned.
Modules assigned to the current rack now are marked in the My Modules section.
This might be extended to multiple racks in the future.
Module Rack Track is a Unicorn feature.

Forum: buffer texts

If users are idle for too long, they will be kicked out of the system. This is especially annoying if they were in the process of writing long texts in the forum, because they might lose all their well thought out thoughts.

Now text in the forum forms will be continuously buffered to the local storage of your browser.
This should survive page reloads as well as a logout, meaning if you are kicked out just log in, hit Reply again and your texts hopefully will still be there.

Used Price History

We have a nice chart on offers in the marketplace that shows the price development of the module and the average price asked for the module. It's not the price the module is sold for so it is not super precise but it gives sellers and buyers an idea. The chart only shows up if data is available of course.

This is an exclusive feature for Unicorn users.

Manufacturer searchable datalist

Since we have so many manufacturers listed on MG the manufacturer select box in the module search form was not very easy to operate. Especially on touch devices where you could not enter a letter to shortcut to a manufacturer.
Now we have a datalist which is kind of a searchable select box.
It looks and behaves a little differently in the different browsers. Check it out and type something in the manufacturer field.

Hello,

That doesn't work at all on my smartphone.
Android+ fire fox.

Works well on iPhone/chrome (safari really, as it’s not build around actual chrome 😂)

That works on Chrome.

Ah, shoot. That seems to be a bug in Firefox Android mobile I did not know about. Persists since 3 years :(
Strangely works on iOS Firefox. I will look if there is a walk around for that..

Problems on PC Win10 latest. Hit say 'M' and search doesn't work for manufacturer

Also font now different from the other pull downs

There is a issue with the drop down list that stops at letter W
I cannot search for "Xaoc Devices" using "Xaoc" but i get it with "Devices"

I don't get any movement. Press 'B' and still have the numbers and 'A's - ie the top of the list.

So need to use the slider to get anywhere.

Getting all sorts of odd things - if I type in say melodicer I get invalid manufacturer

Noticed new font for item search - same as manufacturer - the rest the older font

Thanks for the feedback. Please include which browsers you are using.

I cannot reproduce the issue, seems to work here.

It works a bit different now.
Hit B now only shows manufacturers with a b somewhere in the name. That does not have to be the first letter.
I look into it if the behavior can be changed, I too find it a bit odd.

-- OurMod

Press the Clear Manufacturer button in this case.
Sorry for the trouble. If more problems bubble up I might revert it to the old functionality or find a way that the datalist only shows up on touch devices (which was the main reason to make it).

Beep, Bopp, Bleep: [email protected]

Hi there - yes I see now that the manufacturer search finds the letter anywhere.
I always used to - for example mutaple instruments - type in an 'M' and then tab down with the downward arrow.
Current setup is much better - now you can type 'Mut' and you get there.

I'm still getting a problem where if in the first search box I type 'meloDicer' - I get an invalid manufacturer msg box and no search is done. This happens on Edge, Brace and Vivaldi browsers. Appears to happen after I've done a manufacturer search. If you do a name search as the first thing you do it works.

Thanks for the report, there will be an update next week which hopefully fixes some issues.

Manufacturer searchable datalis

Since we have so many manufacturers listed on MG the manufacturer select box in the module search form was not very easy to operate. Especially on touch devices where you could not enter a letter to shortcut to a manufacturer.

The new system is tricky to use on my workstation with a Wacom tablet (I don't have any any of those "mouse" things). If I start typing a name it brings up a "pop-up" with matching manufacturer names, but that pop-up will disappear before I can click on it - it doesn't work well with absolute pointing devices. I can get around this by only using keyboard input but it's a bit clunky. If this new method helps people on other platforms, then perhaps provide a "mode" switch to allow for both methods.

That new feature does more harm than good. I rolled all changes back.
