Hey! I'm building my first rack. I really need some help. I have an extra 60hp case sitting around that I'm using for a Maths, Bitbox micro, Disting mk4 and something else. I don't know yet. I need a power source but I'm not sure what to get. I'm completely new to this. I'm working with a moog grandmother, dfam, mavis and a bsp. Any help or suggestions of better modules to get for that setup would be highly appreciated.
-- JayStax

i think you will be better served in either the modular Reddit or modwiggler beginner forums. I'm still very much figuring things out myself and not the best resource.

your answer will change depending on what kind of music you enjoy making and how you like making it (like are you a keyboardist or more of a sequencer programmer.)

I'm building a big mess of jack of all trades rack since i really like everything from techno to ambient and really anything with a pronounced symth soundscape.

If you're just looking for power, something like the TipTop uZeus or the endorphines 2hp power are great for small cases. for the modules you listed, they draw a little over 500mA on the +12v rail and less than 100mA on the -12v rail. With the right wall wart or power brick, uZeus will pump out 2 amps +12v and 500mA -12v, and the 2hp Power produces 1amp +12v and 700mA -12v. Either would give you headroom to add one or two more modules. Cheers!

ahhh great! Pam's and Steppy work wonderfully. And yeah, at minimum you want one envelope per sound you're making. Another pair of ADSRs and/or Scenes will let you be a lot more flexible. One other fun trick for hats is to set the waveform of one channel on Pam's to be a short decay envelope and have it at x2 or x4 tempo. That frees one of your actual envelopes for other duties. Plus you can do some euclidean things or random skips. Good times!

After Later Audio Scenes (stage clone) looks great, thanks for the tip. I'll do that instead of 2 dual ADSR. Will also check Sound on Sound series. Thanks again for taking the time.

Hey thanks lot for answering!

Sorry, my post lacked context.
I do have Pam's and Steppy for sequencing duties. I was really wondering about the patching techniques you would use to make the most out of these 5 modules as a drum unit.

So if I understand well, I could use one Brooks, one ADSR channel and one VCA channel to implement a kick.

And 2 ADSR channels, one Brooks, noise and 2 VCA channels to implement a snare.

Means I need more ADSR!

So let's say I add a second Dual ADSR to have 4 different envelopes.

Could I then leverage the last Cloaks VCA, the remaining envelope and the noise to add Hats to the mix?

Howdy! What are you using to trigger sounds? Are you hoping to just record one-shot samples into a DAW or do you want to treat your modular rack like a designated drum machine? The thing you can do with just what you have here is run the clock output from the noise/random module into the trigger in on one of the ADSRs. Run white noise out from the noise/random into one of the VCAs and the ADSR out to control the VCA. Keep the Attack, Decay, and Sustain near zero and play around with the release. Turn the clock speed up to how fast you'd want hi-hats to go and you've got that part of the kit going! For bonus, run the S&H out into the CVT input on the ADSR to get some varying length releases and humanize it a bit.

Without a trigger sequencer or at least a clock divider, there's not a whole lot more you could add to the kit as is. For a kick sound, tune one of the Brooks low and run it into a VCA. Have the ADSR go to both control the VCA and have it hit the pitch of Brooks to taste. Other option would be to put the other Brooks into another VCA and patch that VCA output into the FM in on the first Brooks, and use the ADSR out to control the 2nd VCA (and thus the depth of FM from one Brooks into the other).

Similar idea for a snare sound, except combine one Brooks and maybe the colored noise output in two channels of the Cloaks, controlled by the two ADSRs triggered at the same time, but playing with the release times to see what sounds come out of it.

As for modules I'd add, Pam's is great as a master clock and you can program it like a drum sequencer with a little work. A clone of Mutable Instruments Grids is perfect for a 3 piece drum machine, although no matter what you'll want at least one more envelope. For that, I think a clone of Mutable Instruments Stages is perfect for percussive things. Most percussion you really only need a Decay envelope, and Stages can quickly be 6 of those, but you can also set it up to be a mix of decay envelopes, clocks, clock dividers, S&H, or a bunch of other things (particularly with the Quiemem firmware).

Also highly recommend the Sound on Sound Synth Secrets series of articles for in-depth looks at creating a lot of different sounds from base synth components. Cheers friend!

The images doesn't seem to show the last version of the rack. There are in fact 2 brooks.

ModularGrid Rack

Hello all,
I tend to use dedicated percussion modules for drum duties.
Now, I would like to patch my drum sounds out of base components, in order to have more flexibility/sound variety/control.

What could I make out of these 5 modules?

Based on what I read, I could make a decent Kick, snare and hats.

How would you patch a 3 part drum kit with these modules? Or even a 4 part drum kit?

Let me know your thoughts, different choices of modules, additions etc.

Thanks.

A General MIDI synth, complete with full sound banks. Excellent quality samples!
It’s GM, so pretty generic and not tweakable in this unit, so good for backgrounds, pads, and percussion, don’t know if you’ll want to solo any of these.
Can be triggered by CV gate, or by MIDI input, which gives you up to 64 voices of polyphony, quite a large selection in a small package. By using the HOLD function you can get poly sounds with CV, or just trigger them with MIDI.

A simple build, would be a great first kit to give you a solid foundation of sounds for your rig.

Smooth. What's your setup?

Try not to judge me harshly for the Behrenger modules, this is, a replacement for my other rack from 6 years ago was recently stolen during moving, and I simply dont have the money to rebuy those modules for now.
I seem to have forgotten how to modulate. Please tell me where to place the modules I have here, (likely to keep the Utility modules where they are for the layout of my space and wiring).
Also any starter patching ideas would be great.

Warning to anyone who builds their own modules for eurorack.
I oredered parts from a company called MODTEK.UK aka (Tangle of Tings)
They promote themselve as caring about fellow enthusiasts.
They took my money for order said they would post it but never sent items
They will not respond to any emails at all at their support email.
so be cautious when buying from companies, check first if they are reputable traders.

Hi, isn't that exactly what the Molten Bypass (Befaco/Molten Modular) does? Or did I misunderstand? Or are you talking more complex?
-- Rolling_Rat

Ah yes, thank you! This is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for. I clearly need to work on my Googling skills.

I wonder if there are any other alternatives worth considering too?

Looks good, but shouldn't the outputs be labelled "OUT", rather than "CUT"?

Any other views from here on this module?
Did it live up to expectations?

Ive been looking at it & considering getting one for a while but a little on the fence due to size & cost.

Good experience selling a pedal to @gabrielestera, thank you!

I'm currently using a Behringer 173 module as what I would call a "gated effects send", which is working fine but it uses a lot of patch cables and requires using a mixer module for each audio signal. The basic idea: I have an incoming audio signal and gate. When the gate is low the original audio signal is returned, but when the gate is high the audio goes through some processing.

Rack here:
ModularGrid Rack

I'm currently using this with a sequencer to send a drum gate, and that causes the kick and bass to be passed through HPFs. I make a lot of trance so this is a useful way of transitioning between sections. But there are other uses too, such as using big delays to emphasis one or two notes in a sequence without muddying everything.

My ideal module would be something simpler that uses fewer patch cables and less space. It might also be nice to be able to blend between the signals instead of using the gate to switch between wet/dry. I found a DIY option, but I'm hoping there are other ready made alternatives.

Hey,
Here is an update.

I ended up with a differeng setup:

ModularGrid Rack

With 2 more modules than the 12 expected on the 62hp Palette case. Works fine!

It's a fun little skiff. Not much variation on the sounds, but Neo-Trinity allows for on-the-fly cv recording to change melodies, steppy is quite playable, I can alter the synths´ decay with Total Recall and note triggers with Running Order, Electus is quite fun, I even have some ducking with Tymp...not too bad for such a small portable case.

Great module! It would also benefit from having more choices for CV assignment destinations, such as root note. I suppose it should be possible to accomplish with a firmware update, Hoping for this!

Thread: Marketplace

Hello.Could there be some kind of "limit" on market updates? There are users who "update" their products several times a day, so the same offers always appear in first position...

I also own a victor module. the poster above is correct.
Gate input is for vector envelope which mixes the 4 waveforms. and I think continuous means it loops the envelope

if you were to set say Oscillator 4 to silence and make that the end of the vector envelope it will do what you're asking. likewise you can simulate a filter envelope by using a sine oscillator as the end point.

But I think routing back into the GM external input (assuming it has one) would be the best option for what you're trying to do

cool beans! My first modular was Doepfer and still have it. So great, simple and powerful.

Please add "Phase Engineering"

I have created their first module as OTHER, here:

Howdy!

This is a pretty open ended request, so we might need a bit more detail to be able to give you adequate advice. I know it's not specifically Eurorack, but I would really recommend the Behringer 2500 clone as a very reasonably priced all-in-one extremely versatile option. You can also mount that in a standard rack and add a row or two of 84hp rails to expand with things you think you're missing. For drone/ambient I'd recommend some more sources of modulation and maybe some interesting delays/reverbs (if you're not already running it through pedals). Maths is a great addition to the 2600 for envelopes and more complex modulation (also highly recommend the illustrated supplement for Maths, you'll learn A TON about voltage and how to push it around). Updated clones of Clouds (like the Monsoon) are pretty "classic" eurorack nowadays too. Sort of an instant ambient playhouse.

This might just be my personal opinion, but I don't think synthwave type sounds are really where modular shines. When I think of synthwave I think of more typical polysynth options, but the beauty of modular is you can always run a keyboard synth alongside it! (or even INTO it!)

Any more detail on things that are drawing you into modular or sounds that have been inspiring you would be greatly helpful to give you more specific direction.

Hi.
I'm trying to compile my first rack and after a month of research I think I'm back to square one.
First I was looking into Behringer system 100 and 2500 but realizing system 100 is very basic and 2500 ocupies too much space for what it offers I've tried some different configurations and still can't figure out a good set.
I have external sequencer and keyboard with CV/gate out so I don't need any sequencers.
What I'm after is something that I can use for drone/ambient and 80's electronic/synthwave.
Also my budget is 2000€.
Any help would be appreciated.

hello is this able to route a gate and 1v/oct signal in dual mono mode precisely?

update:
figured that with 4ms interface I can replace anything that would be in it's rackspace. So I went overboard, removed the sampler (as I can build that in VCV) and put in the interface. Also changed MIDI interface to USB based with more sockets to be able to control more than just 2x trigger/CV. Also replaced the DJ filter with TTA's forbidden planet as I heard good things about it and the sound is nice.

As a bonus it's somewhat cheaper and less power hungry than what I had in those places.

As long as the total power draw of all the modules is within the capacity of the palette you should be fine. I did the same thing in my niftycase's back when i had them without any problems.

Thanks @sweelinck
Its a bit chaocic with the modes changing on Plaits but Sloths makes for a nice long cycle of changes as part of the mixed modulation.

Enjoy your spare HP, don't rush to fill every last space, this is not like filling sticker books. Resist the urge to 'complete' your rack, its never complete so just relax.

Vast surreal musical landscape (I don't refer to the illustrations next to it). Experimental sound associations that make you want to rush and turn on our own modular :) I really like this introductory comment: 'Marbles is vaguely in control!’ :)) So true and modest... Bravo for this exploration!

Do you already have any of these?

Plaits split into Mimeophon, Clouds and Veno-Echo

Lots of mixed modulation, Marbles is vaguely in control!

what should i get first: Some drums and constellation for sequencing or a Delay like the sealegs?

Objective

Portable weekend/travel palette.

Context

Pushing the limits of the 62hp palette beyond the 12 native power slots w/ flying bus cable, with modules that didn't make the final cut on my main rack

Music

Techno-dub-ish delirium

Random patch notes

  • Total recall will handle decay of Brooks and Pico Drum high hat through Pons Asinorum; decay of pluck
  • Remaining Pons tracks will be for modulation
  • Tymp legio will hanlde BD with low bass and ducking
  • Brooks for mid bass
  • Pluck for lead
  • Peaks not sure yet, but probably snares or modulation
  • Pico Drums 2nd track for bell or snares (if Peaks is on modulation duty)
  • Arp...well...arp cv distributed to both Brooks, Tymp and Pluck cv/oct (they'll all have different triggers)
  • Running order and Steppy - sequencing duties w/ one track of Steppy for reset variations
  • Pico dsp for drum fx
  • Electus (or I'll flash it for Desmodus) for fx on the pluck
  • Brooks will be handled with LPG 1U and Pons Asinorum

I'd put the 2 sequencers, total recall and Arp on the same flying bus cable

Will it work ?
Any suggestions for changes ?

Thx a lot !

Thanks for your insights Khimbo!

I was indeed aiming at a live performance case with an emphasis on rythm. I love dnb to death and wanted options to go there if I can so that's the style I was going for. It's the reason why I've put the bitbox in (chopped breaks). I have been drumming for a long time and in any music I listen to I get drawn to the rythm section therefore that idea. I also like the idea of a self sustaining system, "band in a box", to not need anything else besides maybe a MIDI controller to pull off a full set. No idea if I ever get the opportunity to play it live at a venue somewhere but I like to build VCV synths in the same way.

I know the Cs-L from VCV Rack and it's a beast indeed. I was actually considering it when setting up the first take on this, also because I love the aesthetic of Instruo stuff, but got drawn to the grittiness of the LIP. I'm not the kind of person to doubt an expert though, so I swapped the two. I'll take your word for it hehe. I removed the Lorelei as well as the Cs-L can function as two analog voices on its own.

Can you maybe elaborate more on the unpredictability you speak of?

Yesterday, after giving a Masterclass on Modular Synthesizers at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), my dear friend and musical partner, estroe had all her Modular Synth gear stolen from her car. This is absolutely devastating. A Modular Synth is a deeply personal and valuable instrument, something built over years, and not easily replaced.

I’m reaching out to the Synth Community and asking everyone to keep their eyes and ears open. If you see someone trying to sell multiple modules from this list, please send me or Estroe a message. The list of stolen modules is attached, and you can find a link to her Modular Grid Case in my bio, also shown in one of the photos.

Let’s come together and show Estroe some support. Anyone who has a love of modular synths will understand that this is heartbreaking. Thank you.

I'm happy to help. Certainly had my fair share of head scratchers when I was getting going.

Seems like that ALM headphone module will be perfect for your needs. Personally I use a Befaco Outs V3 because I need the balanced 1/4" jacks, but if all you need is the headphone out then something like that would be overkill.

Another thing to consider, if you wanted a bit more from the ES-8 but didn't feel like going the ES-9 route there are some expanders for more ins/outs. I've got the ES-6/ ES-3 combo for 6 extra ins and 8 outs respectively. They work very well and have kept me satisfied enough with the ES-8 that I haven't really thought about upgrading to the ES-9.

Happy patching!

much appreciated ! ive had AUM for years and never really used it but ill definitely be firing it up and having a look . ordered the headphone module from ALM today . would love to upgrade to the es-9 but i literally just got the es-8 so ill see how it goes for now !

No problem.

The mixing of modular signals and ipad audio will be taken care of via whatever ipad app you're using (there are plenty of options). I found AUM to be really useful, as it lets you route audio in and out of different apps to ultimately be sent back out of the ES-8. Sure, you could just stick with Logic, but AUM will give you a lot more options.

The purpose of the output module would be to combine two mono outputs of the ES-8, for example outs 1+2, into one trs out with suitable levels for headphones.

Important distinction between 'combining' and 'mixing' here. The output module in theory shouldn't be doing any mixing. rather it's providing you with the TRS jack your headphones need.
